VISIBLE AREA, NOT REDACTION

Crop PDF margins without hiding important content

Cropping changes what the page shows

PDF cropping is useful when a scan has a large blank border or when a page was exported with unnecessary surrounding space. It changes the visible page boundary. That is different from deleting content. Material outside the new boundary can remain inside the PDF, so cropping should never be used as a privacy or redaction method.

Begin with a small percentage

The crop tool accepts separate top, bottom, left and right percentages. A cautious first pass is usually better than a large crop. With the practice page, start around 5% on each side and inspect the result. If the page is 595 × 842 points, removing 5% from both left and right leaves 90% of the width, or 535.5 points. Removing 5% from both top and bottom leaves 757.8 points.

SettingWhat it meansWhat to inspect
Left / rightTrims a percentage of the current page widthSide notes, stamps, signatures
Top / bottomTrims a percentage of the current page heightHeaders, footers, page numbers
Different page sizesThe same percentage removes a different physical amountEvery page, not only the first

Test the edges that people often overlook

Zoom in and look for content near all four edges. Common examples include a signature that touches the lower margin, a barcode close to the right edge, a page number in the footer, or a scan shadow that makes the true paper edge hard to see. A crop that looks fine on page 1 can cut content on page 2 if the original pages are different sizes or have different layouts.

Do not crop an already cropped copy repeatedly

Each new crop works from the currently visible area of the file you selected. If you crop 10% and then crop that downloaded result another 10%, the second crop is not the same as one 20% crop from the original. Keep the original PDF and return to it when you want to try another setting.

Cropping is not a way to remove confidential information

If a name, account number or other sensitive detail sits near the edge, moving the visible boundary past it may make it disappear on screen while leaving the underlying content recoverable. Secure redaction requires a workflow designed to remove the information, not merely hide it. Ready File Tools does not present cropping as redaction.

When cropping is the wrong tool

A simple review checklist

Compare the cropped file with the original at the same zoom. Check the first page, the last page and any page with a signature, stamp, table or footer. Confirm that the document still communicates the same information. Then download and keep the finished copy separately from your source.
