TRY IT & CHECK THE RESULT
Choose what the smaller file must retain
For a selectable-text report, try Optimize first. For a photographed or scanned page that exceeds an upload limit, try image-based compression after reading its notice. A smaller file is useful only if the receiving person can still read the small print.
What to check in your download
Compare the original and result at the same zoom. Check reference numbers, punctuation and signatures. An image-based result loses selectable text, links and form interaction; do not choose it when these are required. The linked worked example includes actual input and output files.
If the result is not what you expected
If the result is not smaller, the tool offers the original instead. Repeatedly compressing that same copy is unlikely to help. Remove genuinely unneeded pages or reduce source-image resolution, then compare again. No setting guarantees a particular KB target.
Limits and what to review
Image-based compression removes selectable text, links, and interactive fields; it requires acknowledgement before running. Review small text and fine detail. A PDF that is already optimized may not become smaller.
Frequently asked questions
What if the compressed result is larger?
The tool explains that the chosen setting did not reduce the size and offers your original PDF for download instead.
Will text remain selectable?
The optimization method does not rebuild page images. Image-based compression does rebuild pages as images and removes selectable text.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
Files are processed within your browser session. Download results before closing the page; there is no cloud document history.
